Konia in Smart and Sustainable Homes

Sustainable Home Gold Coast was a showcase demonstration project that combined leading examples of sustainable housing design with the latest 'high-tech' household features within an affordable family dwelling.

This display house was also known locally as Innovation House 2 or IH2.

An initiative of the Gold Coast City Council, Sustainable Home Gold Coast is located at Coomera in the new 'Genesis' residential estate developed by Heritage Pacific at the northern end of Gold Coast City.Sustainable Home Gold Coast was the first project to be opened under Queensland’s Sustainable Homes program.

Sustainable Home Gold Coast displayed the 'triple bottom line' approach to housing design and construction, as it addressed the three essential smart housing elements of social, economic and environmental sustainability.

The house incorporated numerous climate smart design features, including passive design - being well-orientated with good cross-ventilation, insulation, shading and lightweight construction building materials; energy efficient skylights and natural lighting with good window design; low-toxic eco-paint; instantaneous gas hot water; high-tech underground and slimline above ground rainwater tanks; water efficient products and appliances; energy and water use monitoring system; sustainable bamboo flooring; and solar pavers that light the way to the self-opening front door at night. It showcased how a good simple design can create a home that is safe, accessible and flexible to demonstrate the considerable lifestyle and economic benefits of sustainable housing.

Sustainable Home Gold Coast also served as a physical focus for Gold Coast City Council’s WaterFutures project as it is located within the Pimpama Coomera Waterfuture Master Plan area. This estate includes waterwise design features, such as an integrated urban water management strategy that catches, stores and slowly releases stormwater, will use recycled water through 'dual reticulation' piping and will provide efficient use of rainwater both within homes and on their gardens.

The Konia system made its contribution to the sustainability targets, generating enough drinking water for the whole household. From the first innovation house in 2003 many more sustainable homes have been designed and it is encouraging to see more households duplicating this sustainable approach to their housing. KONIA WATER SIGNS MULTI-MILLION USD INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENTS

Konia Australia Pty Ltd trading as Konia Water today announced it had signed new multi-million USD international distributor agreements for its quality “WATER from AIR” making machines and water filtration products to be distributed throughout the USA, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia.

Mr Stephen Wallace, Konia Water’s Chief Executive Officer, said that these international distributor agreements are the result of prudent management and marketing. “We have focussed our energies on promoting our water from air and filtration technologies whilst working within our financial capabilities. With these additional agreements, we are in a stronger position to continue to build internationally,” Mr Wallace said today.

The new international distributors are Konia US, Inc. recently established by Brandt’s WaterPure International in the USA, Liquid of Life LLC in the UAE and Vigilant Sdn Bhd (Qi Group) in Malaysia.

Donald Coughlin of Brandt's WaterPure International explained, "After researching and testing virtually every Atmospheric Water Generator (and every AWG manufacturer) made for the home/office, we made the decision to partner with Konia for several reasons. Their simplistic yet state of the art technology, the quality and flexibility of their product line (split system) and the drinking water their units produce, and most importantly the quality and character of the people who operate Konia Australia! With that being said we now know we can solve any drinking water situation, whether it be a home or a multi-national corporation, on time, under budget, and with the best quality drinking water available today!"

Under the agreements, these new international distributors are obliged to purchase a minimum quantity of units from Konia Water, generating multi-million USD sales for Konia Water.

“We are seeing our global marketing efforts really starting to pay off,” Mr Wallace said today.

“The international interest in our WATER from AIR making machines is reaching an all time high.”

About Konia Water

Konia’s WATER technologies and the unique split unit system is the careful evolution of over a decade of research and development in the water industry.

WATER from AIR generator and water purification technology sets new standards for the production of pure drinking water directly from the air. The atmospheric water generator converts moisture (humidity) in the air to water. This water is then passed through the water filtration system to provide pure, fresh water direct to your home or office.

The 5000 Series, for home and office use, can, under optimal conditions, be expected to produce up to 40 litres of water per day at low energy costs.

The larger 9000 Series is capable of producing up to 80 litres of water per day or alternatively multiple generators can be connected together in a bank of generators to produce larger amounts of water.

The Effects of Bottled Water on the Environment

It is hard to argue the fact that waste management has become a large problem in the world, with landfills growing to enormous sizes and recycling rates remaining dismally low. The number of plastic bottles produced by the bottled water industry and subsequently discarded by consumers has only exacerbated this problem. According to a 2001 report of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), roughly 1.5 million tons of plastic are expended in the bottling of 89 billion liters of water each year. Besides the sheer number of plastic bottles produced each year, the energy required to manufacture and transport these bottles to market severely drains limited fossil fuels.

Bottled water companies, due to their unregulated use of valuable resources and their production of billions of plastic bottles have presented a significant strain on the environment. The authors of the WWF report suggested that water bottles be washed and reused in order to lessen their negative impact on the environment. Unfortunately, reusing plastic bottles further compromises the quality of the water, due to the fact that more and more phthalate leaches its way into the water as the bottle gets older. In another suggestion, the authors recommended that bottled water companies use local bottling facilities in order to lessen fuel expenditures for transportation needs. Regrettably, local bottling further compromises water quality due to the reduced health standards for in-state bottled water production and consumption. It seems there is no feasible solution to this problem. The bottled water industry causes a severe strain on the environment, but solutions to this environmental damage significantly lessen the quality of water in the bottles. Rainwater tanks 'full of lead and aluminium' say Australian Scientists

So what are your children drinking at school?

A recent joint venture between Melbourne Monash University and CSIRO research has found the use of lead in roofs to join surfaces and channel away water elevated the risks of rainwater tanks being contaminated with lead and other heavy metals, pushing the lead content in some storage systems as high as 50 times Australia's drinking water guidelines. (http://www.csiro.au/resources/CommonRainwaterContaminants.html )

Across a broader range of roof types and tanks, one-third of those surveyed contained lead concentrations in the water exceeding safe drinking levels by up to 35 times.

"Concentrations of Aluminium, Cadmium, Iron and Zinc were also found at levels exceeding acceptable health and aesthetic levels," the study reports.

In South Australia, almost half of households use some water from tanks, and more than a fifth use them as their main source of drinking water.
Study co-author Grace Mitchell said some people also simply preferred the taste of rainwater, or considered it more natural. "It is more natural in the sense that it's not treated but in some cases that's not a good thing," she said.

With this recent study in mind, Konia Water congratulates the Australian Federal Government for the recent economic stimulus programs designed at improving ageing infrastructure within Australian Schools. This is a welcomed development and we understand that schools Australia-wide will be reviewing existing infrastructure demands including providing improved drinking water solutions for both staff and children in sports gymnasiums, cafeteria’s, staff rooms and so on. (http://www.cmd.act.gov.au/stimulus )

Water filtration systems are essential to ensure the water being consumed by tomorrow’s future is as pure as possible.

The announcement by the Federal Government is a tremendous opportunity for our schools to upgrade existing drinking water solutions using Queensland’s own Konia Water, a world leader in pure water technology. Moving away from bottled water!

Bottled water is BIG business. Recent research in the U.S suggests that by 2011, the market is
forecast to have a volume of 174,286.6 million litres, an increase of 51% since 2006. According to CHOICE com au In Australia alone we CHOICE.com.au, down more than 150 million litres a year at a cost of $123million. (http://www.choice.com.au/viewArticle.aspx?id=104793&catId=100286&tid=100008 )

Despite the creative marketing initiatives underpinning the bevy of bottled‐water varieties on offer (artesian, artesian‐well, ground, mineral, purified, sparkling and spring), the fact remains that approximately 25% of bottled water is sourced from Mains Water.
The U.S Food and Drug Administation (FDA) reports that "about 75 percent of bottled water sold in the U.S. comes from natural underground sources, which include rivers, lakes, springs and artesian wells." The other 25% comes from municipal sources, which are the “sources” of two leading brands of bottled water‐‐Dasani (Coca‐Cola) and Aquafina (PepsiCo).The FDA was quoting as saying, "Companies that market bottled water as being safer than tap water are defrauding the American public." ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5467759/ )

It also takes water to make a bottle, particularly if a Reverse Osmosis system is used to purify the water. If a container holds 1 litre it requires approximately 3 litres of water in its manufacturing. By one estimate the total amount of water used to produce and deliver one litre bottle of imported water may be as high as 6.74 litres.
Furthermore, Peter Gleick of the Pacific Institute estimates that producing the bottles for American consumption in 2006 required the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels (2,700,000 m3) of oil. Overall, the average energy cost to make the plastic, fill the bottle, transport it to market and then deal with the waste would be "like filling up a quarter of every bottle with oil."

Organisations such as The Natural Resources Defence Council, Sierra Club and World Wildlife Fund have all urged their supporters to consume less bottled water, and various campaigns against bottled water are increasingly common.
Similarly, Konia remains a passionate advocate for the reduction of consumer reliance on both
Mains Water and PET bottles. Konia WATER from AIR technology is an energy efficient, environmentally friendly solution that can provide you with pure drinking water drawn from the surrounding natural environment (http://www.konia.com.au/p2_air.html ).

Like their Water from Air cousins, Konia Mains connected systems do not produce any by-products and use the same patented technology that filters water capable of filtering out most chemicals and bacteria down to one hundredth of one millionth of one meter (0.01 micron).
Konia Water. It’s greener, it’s healthier and most importantly of all, it’s cost efficient. Now that’s
pure water innovation. (http://www.konia.com.au/p2_mains.html )
